EVENTS

Professional Development Seminar (PDS)

This event occurs during the fall semester, annually, usually around October. Our PDS event is a professional development seminar for full-time student support services professionals working in higher education and non-profit organizations with a focus on educational access and equity. The event is hosted in a different city throughout the central coast or central valley. This year, we are headed back to the coast. Our PDS event will take place in beautiful San Luis Obispo, California, at the Embassy Suites Hotel and Conference Center on October 6-7, 2021.  The committee usually begins committee-work around April and carries through to the conference event and wraps up by the end of that month. Volunteer opportunities include various committees, such as: local arrangements, registration, workshop, conference swag, speaker selection, president’s reception, and others. The chair or co-chairs is usually selected by the President of the chapter. This year’s chair is Roberto Mariscal of Fresno City College. Aspiring to the Directorship Institute

This new event will be held in January 2022 with a location to be TBD. This event is geared towards full-time professionals working in higher education who aspire to the director-level role. Similar to our PDS, this event is looking for volunteers to assist with registration, marketing, local arrangements, etc. For more information, please fill out the Google form below.

TRIO Days

On February 24, 1986, a congressional resolution (H. Con. Res. 278) declared that Saturday, February 28, 1986, should be designated as “National TRIO Day” to commemorate the annual achievements of the Federal TRIO programs in communities across the country.

Every year since then, associations across the nation has reserved the fourth Saturday in February as National TRIO Day — an opportunity to focus the nation’s “attention on the needs of disadvantaged young people and adults aspiring to improve their lives if they are to become contributing citizens of the country, and to the talent which will be wasted if that investment is not made.” For many programs, National TRIO Day has become a tradition as it allows students who benefit from the TRIO programs and to give back to their local communities through acts of service.

CenCal will be celebrating TRIO Day on Saturday, February 26, 2022. Our event brings together TRIO programs from across the central coast and central valley to a campus for a day filled of fun and educational activities. We our looking for several volunteers to serve in a variety of capacities; including, serving as a host institution. Committee meetings will commence as soon as a host institution is identified. For more information or to volunteer, please fill out the Google form below.

Summer Jam

Our Summer Jam event takes place in June of each summer. This event is usually tied to Summer Academy programs that are occurring with many of our pre-college programs within the chapter. It is one of the culminating events for our chapter. At this event, we host a fun-filled day of activities and competitions where teams of TRIO participants compete against other TRIO programs throughout the central coast/central valley. Due to COVD, the 2020 and 2021 events had to be canceled, so we are excited to bring this event back in 2022. For more information, please fill out the Google form to volunteer.
